Memory and MRI-based hippocampal volumes in aging and AD
Ronald Carl Petersen, Clifford R. Jack, Ying-Qi Xu, Stephen C. Waring, Peter C. O’Brien, Glenn E. Smith, Robert J. Ivnik, E. G. Tangalos et al.. Neurology, 2000-02-08
Topic: Brain imaging, connectivity and assessment
The volume of the hippocampal formation predicted performance on most acquisition and recall measures across the spectrum of normal aging and AD. If the groups were segregated, most of the expected associations between medial temporal lobe structures and memory measures were observed in the AD patients. MRI-based hippocampal volumetry accurately depicts the structural-functional relationships between memory loss and hippocampal damage across the spectrum from normal aging to dementia.
Key findings
- The volume of the hippocampal formation predicted performance on most acquisition and recall measures across the spectrum of normal aging and AD.
- If the groups were segregated, most of the expected associations between medial temporal lobe structures and memory measures were observed in the AD patients.
- MRI-based hippocampal volumetry accurately depicts the structural-functional relationships between memory loss and hippocampal damage across the spectrum from normal aging to dementia.

How this study scored 55/100
Published in a leading specialty journal, and it is a longitudinal study following the same people over time. Scored zero for sample size, effect reported, studied in people and randomised / blinded because the record does not state it. We have no data on journal's citation record, times cited, citations per year, impact for its field and year, cited by studies here, still being cited, senior author's track record, institution's track record and multi-centre collaboration, so those were left out: it earned 32 of the 58 points we could judge it on, which is 55 out of 100.
