Ocular biomarkers of cognitive decline based on deep-learning retinal vessel segmentation
Rui Li, Ying Hui, Xiaoyue Zhang, Shun Zhang, Bin Lv, Yuan Ni, Xiaoshuai Li, Xiaoliang Liang et al.. BMC geriatrics, 2024-01-06
Topic: Brain imaging, connectivity and assessment
The fractal dimension (FD) and global vein width were significantly correlated with the CI (P < 0.05). Age (0.193), BMI (0.154), global vein width (0.106), retinal vessel FD (0.099), and CRAE (0.098) were the variables in this model that were ranked in order of feature importance. The AUC values of the model were 0.799. Establishment of a predictive model based on the extraction of vascular features from fundus images has a high recognizability and predictive power for cognitive function and can be used as a screening method for CI.

Key findings
- The fractal dimension (FD) and global vein width were significantly correlated with the CI (P < 0.05).
- Age (0.193), BMI (0.154), global vein width (0.106), retinal vessel FD (0.099), and CRAE (0.098) were the variables in this model that were ranked in order of feature importance.
- Establishment of a predictive model based on the extraction of vascular features from fundus images has a high recognizability and predictive power for cognitive function and can be used as a screening method for CI.

How this study scored 55/100
Published in a peer-reviewed journal. Scored zero for study design, effect reported and randomised / blinded because the record does not state it. We have no data on journal's citation record, times cited, citations per year, impact for its field and year, cited by studies here, still being cited, senior author's track record, institution's track record, multi-centre collaboration and free to read, so those were left out: it earned 31 of the 56 points we could judge it on, which is 55 out of 100.
