Every number on this page is free to call, and every one shows the hours it is actually staffed. You do not need a diagnosis, an appointment or an emergency to use any of them.
If someone is in immediate danger
Call 911. If you call about a person with dementia, say "this person has dementia" in the first sentence — it changes how responders approach, and it protects them.
Helplines
Two of these are open around the clock. One is not, and it says so — an hours mismatch is the difference between reaching a person and reaching a recording.

- 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline 988 24/7 Call or text 988, or chat at 988lifeline.org. For anyone in emotional distress or a mental-health crisis, including caregivers.

Information and referral lines
These are not crisis lines. They are federal information services: publications, research and clinical-trial referrals, in English and Spanish. They keep office hours.
- ADEAR Center (NIA) - Alzheimer's & related Dementias Education & Referral 800-438-4380 business hours (federal information center) Federal information service of the National Institute on Aging. Information on caregiving, clinical trials and research in English and Spanish.
- NIA Information Center 800-222-2225 business hours (federal information center) Health information for families, caregivers and health professionals, in English and Spanish.
Finding services where you live
Day programmes, meals, transport, home aides and respite are arranged locally, through the Area Agency on Aging that covers your county. Two ways to reach yours:
- The Alzheimer's Association helpline above will look it up with you, at any hour.
- The Administration for Community Living runs a national locator service at eldercare.acl.gov.
One number we are deliberately not printing
We hold every phone number on this site to the same rule: it gets published only if we could read it on the owning organization's own page during verification.
- Eldercare Locator. Widely circulated, but we could not confirm it at eldercare.acl.gov, so we are withholding the number and linking to the site instead. Use the website above, or ask the Alzheimer's Association helpline to connect you.
A number that rings nowhere is worse than no number at all when you are the one dialling it.

The rules we publish under
- Show the HOURS next to the number. An hours mismatch is worse than no number.
- 988 and 800-272-3900 are the only two that may be labelled 24/7.
- Do not add a resource that is not in this file without verifying it at its source first.
- Do not present any of these as medical advice; they are support and information lines.
