✓ Peer-reviewed alzhub usefulness score 45 out of 100. Inflammation and the immune system

Topic: Amyloid, tau and blood-test diagnosis

Alzheimer Disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder and the most common form of dementia. Histopathologically is characterized by the presence of two major hallmarks, the intracellular neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) and extracellular neuritic plaques (NPs) surrounded by activated astrocytes and microglia. NFTs consist of paired helical filaments of truncated tau protein that is abnormally hyperphosphorylated.

Key findings

Why it matters

This review describes the hallmark Alzheimer's pathology of neurofibrillary tangles and neuritic plaques surrounded by activated astrocytes and microglia, and notes that the main plaque component is amyloid-beta peptide. It reports no treatment, cure or prevention finding.
