Generative artificial intelligence in dementia care: a scoping review protocol on nursing roles, experiences and ethical perspectives
Yong-chuan Chen, Hsiao‐Chi Nieh, Hsiao-Chu Chen, Jung-Chih Chen, Mei‐Yu Chang, Pi-O Wu. BMJ Open, 2026-02-01
Topic: Risk, prevention and care in population studies
Critical appraisal will not be undertaken, as it is optional in scoping reviews and is not aligned with the primary mapping objectives of this review. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethical approval is not required as the review synthesises publicly available literature. Should the optional interest-holders consultation be undertaken, ethical clearance will be obtained from an appropriate institutional review board prior to participant engagement. Findings will be disseminated through peer-reviewed publication, conference presentations and knowledge-translation outputs targeted at clinicians, educators, policymakers and AI developers. The review will support informed, ethically grounded integration of GAI in dementia care.
Key findings
- Critical appraisal will not be undertaken, as it is optional in scoping reviews and is not aligned with the primary mapping objectives of this review.
- ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethical approval is not required as the review synthesises publicly available literature.
- Should the optional interest-holders consultation be undertaken, ethical clearance will be obtained from an appropriate institutional review board prior to participant engagement.
- Findings will be disseminated through peer-reviewed publication, conference presentations and knowledge-translation outputs targeted at clinicians, educators, policymakers and AI developers.
- The review will support informed, ethically grounded integration of GAI in dementia care.
Why it matters
This is a protocol for a scoping review on generative artificial intelligence in dementia care, focused on nursing roles, experiences and ethical perspectives. It is a review plan only and does not test any treatment, cure or prevention.

How this study scored 51/100
Published in a peer-reviewed journal, and it is a meta-analysis pooling many studies. Scored zero for sample size, effect reported and studied in people because the record does not state it. We have no data on senior author's track record, so that was left out: it earned 49 of the 96 points we could judge it on, which is 51 out of 100.
