A systematic analysis for disease burden, risk factors, and trend projection of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias in China and globally
Siyu Liu, Daoying Geng. PLoS ONE, 2025-05-07
Topic: Risk, prevention and care in population studies
The disease burden of ADD in China is heavier than in most countries and regions. By 2021, China's disease burden has increased by three times, while the global disease burden has doubled. Females bear more burden but face lower mortality. Population growth is the main reason for the burden. Smoking, high fasting plasma glucose and high body-mass index are the three major risk factors, among which high fasting plasma glucose occupies a dominant position. The disease burden of ADD in China and globally is increasing daily and will remain high in the future. It is urgent to introduce some effective intervention measures to prevent such diseases as early as possible.
Key findings
- The disease burden of ADD in China is heavier than in most countries and regions.
- By 2021, China's disease burden has increased by three times, while the global disease burden has doubled.
- Females bear more burden but face lower mortality.
- Population growth is the main reason for the burden.
- Smoking, high fasting plasma glucose and high body-mass index are the three major risk factors, among which high fasting plasma glucose occupies a dominant position.
Why it matters
This analysis reports that the dementia burden in China has tripled and globally doubled by 2021, with smoking, high fasting plasma glucose, and high BMI as major risk factors. It calls for early intervention but tests no specific treatment, cure, or prevention.

How this study scored 46/100
Published in a peer-reviewed journal. Scored zero for study design, sample size, effect reported, studied in people and randomised / blinded because the record does not state it. We have no data on senior author's track record, so that was left out: it earned 44 of the 96 points we could judge it on, which is 46 out of 100.
