Type 2 Diabetes as a Risk Factor for Dementia in Women Compared With Men: A Pooled Analysis of 2.3 Million People Comprising More Than 100,000 Cases of Dementia
Chatterjee S, Peters SAE, Woodward M, et al.. Diabetes Care, 2016-02
Topic: Risk, prevention and care in population studies
Pooling data on over 2.3 million people worldwide, this analysis confirmed that type 2 diabetes raises dementia risk by roughly 60% in both men and women, but the excess risk of vascular dementia specifically was notably higher in women than men.
Key findings
- Diabetes was linked to about a 60% higher risk of any dementia in both women (RR 1.62) and men (RR 1.58)
- For vascular dementia, women with diabetes had more than double the risk (RR 2.34) versus 73% higher risk in men (RR 1.73)
- No significant sex difference was seen for non-vascular (mostly Alzheimer's-type) dementia risk from diabetes
- Analysis pooled 14 studies and over 100,000 dementia cases, making it one of the largest sex-stratified analyses of diabetes and dementia risk
Why it matters
Type 2 diabetes was linked to about 60% higher dementia risk in both women and men, with a notably higher excess risk of vascular dementia in women. This identifies diabetes as a modifiable risk factor, but the analysis does not show that treating diabetes prevents dementia.

Limitations
Observational pooled analysis, so it cannot prove diabetes causes dementia; substantial heterogeneity likely exists across the 14 contributing studies in diabetes and dementia ascertainment methods.
How this study scored 76/100
Published in a leading specialty journal, and it is a meta-analysis pooling many studies. Scored zero for indexed in PubMed because the record does not state it. We have no data on journal's citation record, times cited, citations per year, impact for its field and year, still being cited, senior author's track record, institution's track record, multi-centre collaboration and free to read, so those were left out: it earned 47 of the 62 points we could judge it on, which is 76 out of 100.
