Topic: Risk, prevention and care in population studies

Background The neuropathologic substrate of amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) is not known. Objective To determine the neuropathologic features of patients who died while their clinical classification was aMCI. Participants Sixty-six individuals, including 15 who had memory impairment beyond that allowed for aging but who were not demented, were studied along with 28 clinically healthy individuals and 23 patients with probable Alzheimer disease (AD) for comparison.

Key findings

Why it matters

When this study was published, the authors wrote that the brain changes underlying amnestic mild cognitive impairment — memory problems beyond normal ageing but short of dementia — were 'not known'. They examined brain tissue at autopsy from 15 people who died while diagnosed with amnestic MCI, scored it against three standard Alzheimer's pathology criteria (Khachaturian, CERAD and NIA-Reagan), and compared it with 28 clinically healthy people and 23 people with probable Alzheimer's disease. The results are not included in our record, so this page cannot say what was found; see the original paper.
