Clinical and demographic factors modify the association between plasma phosphorylated tau-181 and cognition
Corey J Bolton, Marilyn Steinbach, Omair A Khan, Dandan Liu, Julia O'Malley, Logan Dumitrescu, Amalia Peterson, Angela L Jefferson et al.. Alzheimer's & dementia (Amsterdam, Netherlands), 2024-12-20
Topic: Plasma and spinal-fluid biomarkers
Higher plasma p-tau181 level was associated with worse memory, executive functioning, and language abilities, and greater informant-reported SCD. Visuospatial abilities and self-report SCD were not associated with plasma p-tau181. Associations were generally stronger in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia, APOE ε4 carriers, women, and younger participants. Higher levels of plasma p-tau181 are associated with worse neuropsychological test performance across multiple cognitive domains; however, these associations vary based on disease stage, genetic risk status, age, and sex. HIGHLIGHTS: Greater plasma p-tau181 was associated with lower cognition across most domains.Associations between p-tau181 and cognition were modified by age and sex.Level of p-tau181 was more strongly associated with cognition in people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4.

How this study scored 57/100
Published in a leading specialty journal. Scored zero for study design, effect reported and randomised / blinded because the record does not state it. We have no data on journal's citation record, times cited, citations per year, impact for its field and year, cited by studies here, still being cited, senior author's track record, institution's track record, multi-centre collaboration and free to read, so those were left out: it earned 32 of the 56 points we could judge it on, which is 57 out of 100.
