Automated Speech Analysis to Differentiate Frontal and Right Anterior Temporal Lobe Atrophy in Frontotemporal Dementia
Jet M. J. Vonk, Brittany T. Morin, Janhavi Pillai, David Rosado Rolon, Rian Bogley, David Paul Baquirin, Zoe Ezzes, Boon Lead Tee et al.. Neurology, 2025-04-10
Topic: Brain proteins, microglia and lab models
We evaluated 62 Automated speech analysis demonstrated high accuracy in differentiating FTD subtypes and provided insights into the neural basis of language impairments. Automated speech analysis could enhance early diagnosis and monitoring of FTD, offering a scalable, noninvasive alternative to traditional methods, particularly in resource-limited settings. Future research should focus on further clinical validation with other neuroimaging or fluid biomarkers and longitudinal cognitive data, as well as external validation in larger and more diverse populations.
Key findings
- We evaluated 62 Automated speech analysis demonstrated high accuracy in differentiating FTD subtypes and provided insights into the neural basis of language impairments.
- Automated speech analysis could enhance early diagnosis and monitoring of FTD, offering a scalable, noninvasive alternative to traditional methods, particularly in resource-limited settings.
- Future research should focus on further clinical validation with other neuroimaging or fluid biomarkers and longitudinal cognitive data, as well as external validation in larger and more diverse populations.
Why it matters
In 62 people, automated speech analysis differentiated subtypes of frontotemporal dementia with high accuracy and offered clues about language impairments. This is a small cross-sectional diagnostic study, not a treatment, cure, or prevention.
