Amyloid pathology fingerprint differentiates post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury
Abdalla Z Mohamed, Paul Cumming, Hussein Srour, Tamara Gunasena, Aya Uchida, Courtney Nicole Haller, Fatima Nasrallah, Department of Defense Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative. NeuroImage. Clinical, 2018-06-05
Topic: Plasma and spinal-fluid biomarkers
Compared to controls, all three clinical groups showed a pattern of mainly increased referenced standard uptake values (SUVR) for the amyloid tracer [18F]-AV45 PET, with rank order PTSD > TBI_PTSD > TBI > Control, and same rank order was seen in the deficits of cognitive functions. SUVR increase was observed in widespread cortical regions of the PTSD group; in white matter of the TBI_PTSD group; and cerebellum and precuneus area of the TBI group, in contrast with controls. The [18F]-AV45 SUVR correlated negatively with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) amyloid levels and positively with the CSF tau concentrations. These results suggest that both TBI and PTSD are substantial risk factors for cognition decline and increased Aβ deposition resembling that in AD. In addition, both PTSD and TBI_PTSD have a different pathways of Aβ accumulation.

Key findings
- Compared to controls, all three clinical groups showed a pattern of mainly increased referenced standard uptake values (SUVR) for the amyloid tracer [18F]-AV45 PET, with rank order PTSD > TBI_PTSD > TBI > Control, and same rank order was seen in the deficits of cognitive functions.
- SUVR increase was observed in widespread cortical regions of the PTSD group; in white matter of the TBI_PTSD group; and cerebellum and precuneus area of the TBI group, in contrast with controls.
- The [18F]-AV45 SUVR correlated negatively with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) amyloid levels and positively with the CSF tau concentrations.
- These results suggest that both TBI and PTSD are substantial risk factors for cognition decline and increased Aβ deposition resembling that in AD.
- In addition, both PTSD and TBI_PTSD have a different pathways of Aβ accumulation.

How this study scored 39/100
Published in a peer-reviewed journal. Scored zero for study design, sample size, effect reported, studied in people and randomised / blinded because the record does not state it. We have no data on journal's citation record, times cited, citations per year, impact for its field and year, cited by studies here, still being cited, senior author's track record, institution's track record, multi-centre collaboration and free to read, so those were left out: it earned 22 of the 56 points we could judge it on, which is 39 out of 100.
