Validation of Optical Coherence Tomography Retinal Segmentation in Neurodegenerative Disease
Bryan M Wong, Richard W Cheng, Efrem D Mandelcorn, Edward Margolin, Sherif El-Defrawy, Peng Yan, Anna T Santiago, Elena Leontieva et al.. Translational vision science & technology, 2019-09-11
Topic: Plasma and spinal-fluid biomarkers
The outer plexiform layer line had one of the lowest mean error ratios (2%), while RNFL had the highest (23%). Agreement between automated software and trained observer was excellent (ICC > 0.98) for retinal thickness and volume of all layers. Mean volume differences between software and observers for the four layers ranged from -0.003 to 0.006 mm3. Mean thickness differences ranged from -1.855 to 1.859 μm. Despite occasional small errors in software-generated retinal sublayer segmentation, agreement was excellent between software-derived and observer-corrected mean volume and thickness sublayer measurements. TRANSLATIONAL RELEVANCE: Automated SD-OCT segmentation software generates valid measurements of retinal layer volume and thickness in NDD subjects, thereby avoiding the need to manually correct nonobvious delineation errors.
Key findings
- The outer plexiform layer line had one of the lowest mean error ratios (2%), while RNFL had the highest (23%).
- Agreement between automated software and trained observer was excellent (ICC > 0.98) for retinal thickness and volume of all layers.
- Mean volume differences between software and observers for the four layers ranged from -0.003 to 0.006 mm3.
- Mean thickness differences ranged from -1.855 to 1.859 μm.
- Despite occasional small errors in software-generated retinal sublayer segmentation, agreement was excellent between software-derived and observer-corrected mean volume and thickness sublayer measurements.

How this study scored 46/100
Published in a peer-reviewed journal. Scored zero for study design, effect reported and randomised / blinded because the record does not state it. We have no data on journal's citation record, times cited, citations per year, impact for its field and year, cited by studies here, still being cited, senior author's track record, institution's track record, multi-centre collaboration and free to read, so those were left out: it earned 26 of the 56 points we could judge it on, which is 46 out of 100.
