P-tau217 in Alzheimer's disease
Julia Telser, Lorenz Risch, Christoph H Saely, Kirsten Grossmann, Philipp Werner. Clinica chimica acta; international journal of clinical chemistry, 2022-03-24
Topic: Plasma and spinal-fluid biomarkers
Current evidence shows that plasma p-tau217 is a sensitive maker of the clinical manifestation and progression of Alzheimer's disease and of pathological changes associated with this condition, including amyloid accumulation, tau burden, brain atrophy and physical degradation. Moreover, given that plasma p-tau217 does not predict such changes in patients with other neurodegenerative disorders, plasma p-tau217 is also specific to Alzheimer's disease. More large, diverse community studies are needed to harmonize plasma p-tau217 measurements and to determine widely applicable diagnostic cut-off values.

Key findings
- Current evidence shows that plasma p-tau217 is a sensitive maker of the clinical manifestation and progression of Alzheimer's disease and of pathological changes associated with this condition, including amyloid accumulation, tau burden, brain atrophy and physical degradation.
- Moreover, given that plasma p-tau217 does not predict such changes in patients with other neurodegenerative disorders, plasma p-tau217 is also specific to Alzheimer's disease.
- More large, diverse community studies are needed to harmonize plasma p-tau217 measurements and to determine widely applicable diagnostic cut-off values.

How this study scored 70/100
Published in a peer-reviewed journal, and it is a systematic review of all the studies on the question. Scored zero for sample size, effect reported and studied in people because the record does not state it. We have no data on journal's citation record, times cited, citations per year, impact for its field and year, cited by studies here, still being cited, senior author's track record, institution's track record, multi-centre collaboration and free to read, so those were left out: it earned 39 of the 56 points we could judge it on, which is 70 out of 100.
