Hippocampal volume in normal aging and traumatic brain injury
Bigler ED, Blatter DD, Anderson CV, Johnson SC, Gale SD, Hopkins RO, Burnett B.. AJNR. American journal of neuroradiology, 1997-01-01
Topic: Risk, prevention and care in population studies
Volumetric measures in a group of patients with traumatic brain injury who had received MR imaging 3 months or less after injury were compared with measurements in other patients in the chronic phase of recovery. Results No significant age group differences were found in the normative group from age 16 to 65. Hippocampal and temporal horn volumes were not significantly related. Comparisons between patients with traumatic brain injury and control subjects showed significant yet modest bilateral atrophic changes in hippocampal and temporal horn enlargement in the patients with brain injury. Hippocampal and temporal horn volumes correlated significantly with each other in the group with traumatic brain injury. Traumatic brain injury results in significant hippocampal atrophy and temporal horn enlargement. The hippocampus and temporal horn volumes were inversely correlated in the group with traumatic brain injury, suggesting a differential relationship of these structures in patients with brain injury as compared with control subjects.

How this study scored 43/100
Published in a peer-reviewed journal. Scored zero for study design, effect reported and randomised / blinded because the record does not state it. We have no data on journal's citation record, times cited, citations per year, impact for its field and year, cited by studies here, still being cited, senior author's track record, institution's track record and multi-centre collaboration, so those were left out: it earned 25 of the 58 points we could judge it on, which is 43 out of 100.
