Topic: Risk, prevention and care in population studies

The aim of the reported trial was to investigate the safety and efficacy of memantine in mild to moderate vascular dementia (VaD). This was a 28-week, double-blind, parallel, randomized controlled trial of memantine 20 mg daily versus placebo which was conducted in 54 centres in the UK. Memantine is a uncompetitive, moderate affinity N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist.

Why it matters

This randomized controlled trial tested memantine 20 mg daily versus placebo in mild to moderate vascular dementia, not Alzheimer's disease. It provides no information on treating, curing or preventing Alzheimer's disease.

Published in a peer-reviewed journal, and it is a meta-analysis pooling many studies. Scored zero for effect reported because the record does not state it. We have no data on senior author's track record, so that was left out: it earned 62 of the 96 points we could judge it on, which is 65 out of 100.
