Volumetric and functional connectivity changes of the thalamic nuclei in different stages of Alzheimer's disease
Emre Hari, Cigdem Ulasoglu-Yildiz, Elif Kurt, Ali Bayram, Hakan Gurvit, Tamer Demiralp. Clinical neurophysiology : official journal of the International Federation of Clinical Neurophysiology, 2024-07-09
Topic: Brain imaging, connectivity and assessment
In the course of AD, the volume of the medial group nuclei, especially the mediodorsal medial magnocellular (MDm) nucleus, decreases. Medial group nuclei and MDm functional connectivity with frontal areas were decreased both in ADD and MCI compared to SCI group, while both of them increased their functional connectivity with visual areas in the ADD group compared to the MCI group. Our study suggests that the medial group of the thalamus, and specifically the MDm, may be affected in AD. Specific thalamic nuclei may be a critical anatomical region for investigating structural and functional changes in AD.
Key findings

How this study scored 43/100
Published in a peer-reviewed journal. Scored zero for study design, sample size, effect reported, studied in people and randomised / blinded because the record does not state it. We have no data on journal's citation record, times cited, citations per year, impact for its field and year, cited by studies here, still being cited, senior author's track record, institution's track record, multi-centre collaboration and free to read, so those were left out: it earned 24 of the 56 points we could judge it on, which is 43 out of 100.
