Cognition-Eye-Brain Connection in Alzheimer's Disease Spectrum Revealed by Multimodal Imaging
Yan Shi, Tingting Shen, Su Yan, Jianwen Liang, Tianyunxi Wei, Yijin Huang, Rong Gao, Ning Zheng et al.. Journal of magnetic resonance imaging : JMRI, 2025-06-29
Topic: Brain imaging, connectivity and assessment
Reductions of FALFF in temporal regions, especially the left superior temporal gyrus (STG) in MCI patients, were linked to decreased RNFL thickness and increased FAZ area significantly. In AD patients, reduced ReHo values in occipital regions, especially the right middle occipital gyrus (MOG), were significantly associated with an enlarged FAZ area. The SCD group showed widespread cortical thickening significantly associated with all aforementioned retinal biometrics, with notable thickening in the right fusiform gyrus (FG) and right parahippocampal gyrus (PHG) correlating with reduced GCL-IPL thickness. DATA Brain function and structure may be associated with cognition and retinal biometrics across the AD spectrum. Specifically, cognition-eye-brain connections may be present in SCD. EVIDENCE LEVEL: 2. TECHNICAL EFFICACY: 3.
Key findings
- Reductions of FALFF in temporal regions, especially the left superior temporal gyrus (STG) in MCI patients, were linked to decreased RNFL thickness and increased FAZ area significantly.
- In AD patients, reduced ReHo values in occipital regions, especially the right middle occipital gyrus (MOG), were significantly associated with an enlarged FAZ area.
- The SCD group showed widespread cortical thickening significantly associated with all aforementioned retinal biometrics, with notable thickening in the right fusiform gyrus (FG) and right parahippocampal gyrus (PHG) correlating with reduced GCL-IPL thickness.
- DATA Brain function and structure may be associated with cognition and retinal biometrics across the AD spectrum.
- Specifically, cognition-eye-brain connections may be present in SCD.

How this study scored 50/100
Published in a peer-reviewed journal. Scored zero for study design, effect reported and randomised / blinded because the record does not state it. We have no data on journal's citation record, times cited, citations per year, impact for its field and year, cited by studies here, still being cited, senior author's track record, institution's track record, multi-centre collaboration and free to read, so those were left out: it earned 28 of the 56 points we could judge it on, which is 50 out of 100.
