Sociodemographic and Clinical Characteristics Associated With Veterans' Digital Needs
Russell LE, Cornell PY, Halladay CW, Kennedy MA, Berkheimer A, Drucker E, Heyworth L, Leder SM et al.. JAMA network open, 2024-11-04
Topic: Risk, prevention and care in population studies
Results Among 6419 veterans screened (mean [SD] age, 67.6 [15.9] years; 716 female [11.2%]; 1740 Black or African American [27.1%]; 202 Hispanic or Latino [3.1%]; 4125 White [64.3%]), 2740 (42.7%) reported 1 or more digital needs. Veterans with dementia were at higher risk of lacking a device (adjusted relative risk [aRR], 1.21; 95% CI, 1.00-1.48). Veterans with high medical complexity were at higher risk of lacking internet (aRR, 1.26; 95% CI, 1.11-1.42). These findings suggest that routine screening is important to understand patients' digital access barriers and connect patients with telehealth resources to address inequities in health care.

How this study scored 52/100
Published in a leading specialty journal. Scored zero for study design, sample size, studied in people and randomised / blinded because the record does not state it. We have no data on journal's citation record, times cited, citations per year, impact for its field and year, cited by studies here, still being cited, senior author's track record, institution's track record and multi-centre collaboration, so those were left out: it earned 30 of the 58 points we could judge it on, which is 52 out of 100.
