Network connectivity and amyloid-β align with tau in atypical Alzheimer disease subtypes
Peter R Millar, Stephanie Doering, Babatunde Adeyemo, Saurabh Jindal, Nicole Sarah McKay, Jeremy F. Strain, Julie K. Wisch, Gordon Zhaoqi An et al.. Alzheimer s Research & Therapy, 2026-08-14
Topic: Amyloid, tau and blood-test diagnosis
Converging evidence suggests that accumulation may be driven by spreading through network connections and/or interactions with amyloid-β (Aβ). These results suggest a temporal sequence of disease progression in brain networks, which might inform explanations of clinico-pathological heterogeneity and the development of precision medicine tools for early detection, prognosis, and treatment of atypical AD.
Key findings
- Converging evidence suggests that accumulation may be driven by spreading through network connections and/or interactions with amyloid-β (Aβ).
- These results suggest a temporal sequence of disease progression in brain networks, which might inform explanations of clinico-pathological heterogeneity and the development of precision medicine tools for early detection, prognosis, and treatment of atypical AD.
Why it matters
This study suggests that tau accumulation in atypical Alzheimer's disease subtypes may spread through brain network connections and interact with amyloid-beta. It is an observational study about disease progression patterns and does not test any treatment, cure, or prevention.
