Topic: Amyloid, tau and blood-test diagnosis

The study constructed gene-regulatory networks in postmortem brain tissues from late-onset Alzheimer's disease patients and nondemented subjects to characterize associated molecular systems. By rank-ordering these network structures, the researchers highlighted an immune- and microglia-specific module containing TYROBP that is upregulated in the disease. Furthermore, experiments with mouse microglia cells overexpressing TYROBP revealed expression changes overlapping the human brain network, showing that the causal network structure predicts responses to gene perturbations.

Why it matters

Uses an integrated systems approach to identify genetic nodes and networks in late-onset Alzheimer's disease.

Published in a peer-reviewed journal. Scored zero for study design, sample size, effect reported, studied in people and randomised / blinded because the record does not state it. We have no data on strength of evidence, so that was left out: it earned 56 of the 95 points we could judge it on, which is 59 out of 100.
