Effect of cognitive reserve on cognitive function in Parkinson's disease
Lihua Gu, Hui Xu. Neurological sciences : official journal of the Italian Neurological Society and of the Italian Society of Clinical Neurophysiology, 2022-03-01
Topic: Brain imaging, connectivity and assessment
The present study showed that higher educational levels were related to better general cognitive function, executive function, memory, and information processing speed in PD patients, whereas no significant association was showed between educational levels and visuospatial function, language in PD patients. Additionally, included studies reported a negative association between educational level and risk of longitudinal progression to MCI in PD patients. In conclusion, the study demonstrated that higher CR might be correlated with better cognitive function and lower risk of longitudinal progression to MCI in PD. In addition, large-scale prospective studies are necessary to explore the effect of CR on cognitive function in PD.
Key findings
- The present study showed that higher educational levels were related to better general cognitive function, executive function, memory, and information processing speed in PD patients, whereas no significant association was showed between educational levels and visuospatial function, language in PD patients.
- Additionally, included studies reported a negative association between educational level and risk of longitudinal progression to MCI in PD patients.
- In conclusion, the study demonstrated that higher CR might be correlated with better cognitive function and lower risk of longitudinal progression to MCI in PD.
- In addition, large-scale prospective studies are necessary to explore the effect of CR on cognitive function in PD.

How this study scored 70/100
Published in a peer-reviewed journal, and it is a meta-analysis pooling many studies. Scored zero for sample size, effect reported and studied in people because the record does not state it. We have no data on journal's citation record, times cited, citations per year, impact for its field and year, cited by studies here, still being cited, senior author's track record, institution's track record, multi-centre collaboration and free to read, so those were left out: it earned 39 of the 56 points we could judge it on, which is 70 out of 100.
