Development of the CogDrisk tool to assess risk factors for dementia
Kaarin J Anstey, Scherazad Kootar, Md Hamidul Huque, Ranmalee Eramudugolla, Ruth Peters. Alzheimer's & dementia (Amsterdam, Netherlands), 2022-07-12
Topic: Brain imaging, connectivity and assessment
Seventeen risk/protective factors met criteria for the algorithm to estimate risk for any dementia including age, sex, education, hypertension, midlife obesity, midlife high cholesterol, diabetes, insufficient physical activity, depression, traumatic brain injury, atrial fibrillation, smoking, social engagement, cognitive engagement, fish consumption (diet), stroke, and insomnia. A version for AD excluded atrial fibrillation and insomnia due to insufficient evidence and included pesticide exposure. There was insufficient evidence for a VaD risk score. Validation of the tool on external datasets is planned. The assessment tool will assist with implementing risk reduction guidelines.
Key findings
- Seventeen risk/protective factors met criteria for the algorithm to estimate risk for any dementia including age, sex, education, hypertension, midlife obesity, midlife high cholesterol, diabetes, insufficient physical activity, depression, traumatic brain injury, atrial fibrillation, smoking, social engagement, cognitive engagement, fish consumption (diet), stroke, and insomnia.
- A version for AD excluded atrial fibrillation and insomnia due to insufficient evidence and included pesticide exposure.
- There was insufficient evidence for a VaD risk score.
- Validation of the tool on external datasets is planned.
- The assessment tool will assist with implementing risk reduction guidelines.

How this study scored 73/100
Published in a leading specialty journal, and it is a meta-analysis pooling many studies. Scored zero for sample size, effect reported and studied in people because the record does not state it. We have no data on journal's citation record, times cited, citations per year, impact for its field and year, cited by studies here, still being cited, senior author's track record, institution's track record, multi-centre collaboration and free to read, so those were left out: it earned 41 of the 56 points we could judge it on, which is 73 out of 100.
