Assessing brain vascular impairment, white matter lesions and ApoE status as predictors of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) in a multicentre sample of patients with Alzheimer's disease: a multidisciplinary retrospective study

Topic: Amyloid, tau and blood-test diagnosis
BPSD severity was independent from cognitive impairment, vascular impairment, white matter lesions and ApoE status. Our results do not confirm the possible role for vascular impairment in BPSD severity as previously reported. Studies focusing on different biological features in relation to other structural, psychosocial and environmental factors are needed in order to get a more reliable model.

Key findings
- BPSD severity was independent from cognitive impairment, vascular impairment, white matter lesions and ApoE status.
- Our results do not confirm the possible role for vascular impairment in BPSD severity as previously reported.
- Studies focusing on different biological features in relation to other structural, psychosocial and environmental factors are needed in order to get a more reliable model.
Why it matters
In this cross-sectional study, the severity of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia was independent of cognitive impairment, vascular impairment, white matter lesions, and ApoE status. The results do not confirm a previously reported role for vascular impairment in these symptoms.

How this study scored 37/100
Published in a peer-reviewed journal, and it is a snapshot of people at one point in time. Scored zero for effect reported and randomised / blinded because the record does not state it.
