Air pollution and dementia in older adults in the Ginkgo Evaluation of Memory Study
Erin O Semmens, Cindy S Leary, Annette L Fitzpatrick, Sindana D Ilango, Christina Park, Claire E Adam, Steven T DeKosky, Oscar Lopez et al.. Alzheimer's & dementia : the journal of the Alzheimer's Association, 2022-04-18
Topic: Air pollution and environmental exposures
An interquartile range increase in 20-year PM2.5 was associated with a 20% higher risk of dementia (95% confidence interval [CI]: 5%, 37%) and an increased risk of mixed VaD/AD but not AD alone. Our findings suggest that air pollutant exposures over decades contribute to dementia and that effects of current exposures may be experienced years into the future.

How this study scored 45/100
Published in a leading specialty journal. Scored zero for study design, sample size, effect reported, studied in people and randomised / blinded because the record does not state it. We have no data on journal's citation record, times cited, citations per year, impact for its field and year, cited by studies here, still being cited, senior author's track record, institution's track record, multi-centre collaboration and free to read, so those were left out: it earned 25 of the 56 points we could judge it on, which is 45 out of 100.
