Severe impairment battery. A neuropsychological test for severely demented patients
Panisset M, Roudier M, Saxton J, Boller F.. Archives of neurology, 1994-01-01
Topic: Risk, prevention and care in population studies
Objective Patients with progressive dementia invariably evolve to a stage where they can no longer be tested by standard neuropsychological tests. We studied the use of the Severe Impairment Battery (SIB) in such patients. Patients Sixty-nine patients who met the criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders, Revised Third Edition, for dementia were selected.

Key findings
- We studied the use of the Severe Impairment Battery (SIB) in such patients.
- Patients Sixty-nine patients who met the criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders, Revised Third Edition, for dementia were selected.
- The diagnosis of probable Alzheimer's disease was established according to the guidelines suggested by the National Institute of Neurologic and Communicative Diseases and Stroke/Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association.
- The mean age of the population was 82.99 +/- 5.66 years.
Why it matters
This study looked at a test called the Severe Impairment Battery for patients whose dementia is too advanced for standard tests. It is about measuring thinking in late-stage disease, not about treating, curing or preventing Alzheimer's disease.

How this study scored 55/100
Published in a peer-reviewed journal, and it is a longitudinal study following the same people over time. Scored zero for effect reported and randomised / blinded because the record does not state it.
