Sensory impairment and algorithmic classification of early cognitive impairment
Yurun Cai, Jennifer A Schrack, Alden L Gross, Nicole M Armstrong, Bonnielin K Swenor, Jennifer A Deal, Frank R Lin, Hang Wang et al.. Alzheimer's & dementia (Amsterdam, Netherlands), 2023-04-14
Topic: Brain imaging, connectivity and assessment
Cross-sectionally, participants with ≥3 SI had twice the prevalence of ECI (prevalence ratio = 2.10, p = 0.02). Longitudinally, there was no significant association between SI and incident ECI over up to 6 years of follow-up. SI is associated with higher prevalence, but not incident ECI. Future studies with large sample sizes need to further elucidate the relationship between SI and ECI. HIGHLIGHTS: Sensory impairment is associated with high prevalence of early cognitive impairmentMultisensory impairment may pose a strong risk of early changes in cognitive functionIdentifying multisensory impairment may help early detection of dementia.

How this study scored 55/100
Published in a leading specialty journal, and it is a snapshot of people at one point in time. Scored zero for sample size, effect reported, studied in people and randomised / blinded because the record does not state it. We have no data on journal's citation record, times cited, citations per year, impact for its field and year, cited by studies here, still being cited, senior author's track record, institution's track record, multi-centre collaboration and free to read, so those were left out: it earned 31 of the 56 points we could judge it on, which is 55 out of 100.
