Increased choroidal thickness in adults with Down syndrome
Lajos Csincsik, Rachel Nelson, Madeleine J Walpert, Tunde Peto, Anthony Holland, Imre Lengyel. Alzheimer's & dementia (Amsterdam, Netherlands), 2021-03-17
Topic: Plasma and spinal-fluid biomarkers
ChT was increased in people with DS (pwDS) compared to Ctrl. This increase was associated with gender differences and positively correlated with cerebral Aβ load in a small subset. There was no significant correlation detected between ChT and age or cognitive status. In contrast to sAD this study found a significantly thicker choroid in pwDS. Whether these changes are related to Aβ pathology in DS needs further investigation.
Key findings
- ChT was increased in people with DS (pwDS) compared to Ctrl.
- This increase was associated with gender differences and positively correlated with cerebral Aβ load in a small subset.
- There was no significant correlation detected between ChT and age or cognitive status.
- In contrast to sAD this study found a significantly thicker choroid in pwDS.
- Whether these changes are related to Aβ pathology in DS needs further investigation.

How this study scored 59/100
Published in a leading specialty journal, and it is a snapshot of people at one point in time. Scored zero for effect reported and randomised / blinded because the record does not state it. We have no data on journal's citation record, times cited, citations per year, impact for its field and year, cited by studies here, still being cited, senior author's track record, institution's track record, multi-centre collaboration and free to read, so those were left out: it earned 33 of the 56 points we could judge it on, which is 59 out of 100.
