Gender Differences in the Association Between Hearing Loss and Cognitive Function
Bowen Huang, Guilan Cao, Yanran Duan, Siyu Yan, Mingming Yan, Ping Yin, Hongwei Jiang. American journal of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, 2019-09-11
Topic: Brain imaging, connectivity and assessment
Moderate/severe hearing loss was significantly associated with lower composite z score in males (β = -28.67, 95% confidence interval [95% CI] = -57.13 to -0.20) but not in females (β = -8.82, 95% CI = -36.61 to 18.96). There were gender differences in the association between hearing loss and cognitive function. Future studies need to investigate these gender-specific associations.
Key findings
- Moderate/severe hearing loss was significantly associated with lower composite z score in males (β = -28.67, 95% confidence interval [95% CI] = -57.13 to -0.20) but not in females (β = -8.82, 95% CI = -36.61 to 18.96).
- There were gender differences in the association between hearing loss and cognitive function.

How this study scored 48/100
Published in a peer-reviewed journal. Scored zero for study design, effect reported and randomised / blinded because the record does not state it. We have no data on journal's citation record, times cited, citations per year, impact for its field and year, cited by studies here, still being cited, senior author's track record, institution's track record, multi-centre collaboration and free to read, so those were left out: it earned 27 of the 56 points we could judge it on, which is 48 out of 100.
