Characterize demographics, comorbidities and co‐medications in newly diagnosed United States (US) Alzheimer’s Disease patients using Medicare claims
Krista Marie Schroeder, Ana Sofía Afonso, Huabo Wang, Sarah Grace, Adam Phipps, John Randall Sims. Alzheimer s & Dementia, 2023-12-01
Topic: Amyloid, tau and blood-test diagnosis
Results From 53,890,958 patients with at least one 2019 medical encounter, 33,315,038 qualified for the source population. Overall, the three cohorts were similar in terms of demographics (table 1) with 75.1‐85.3% of patients aged 75+ and 61.5‐66.4% female. Conclusion Extensive understanding of a drug’s real‐world target population can inform generalizability of clinical trial results and highlight unaddressed risk.

Why it matters
This study characterized demographics, comorbidities, and co-medications in newly diagnosed US Alzheimer's disease patients using Medicare claims, finding most were aged 75 or older and female. It provides real-world population information that can inform how broadly clinical trial results apply, but does not test a treatment, cure, or prevention.
