BHA-CS: A novel cognitive composite for Alzheimer's disease and related disorders
Elena Tsoy, Sabrina J Erlhoff, Collette A Goode, Karen A Dorsman, Suchanan Kanjanapong, Cutter A Lindbergh, Renaud La Joie, Amelia Strom et al.. Alzheimer's & dementia (Amsterdam, Netherlands), 2020-06-21
Topic: Brain imaging, connectivity and assessment
The BHA-CS was accurate at detecting cognitive impairment and exhibited excellent long-term stability. Reliable decline over one year was detected in 75% of participants with dementia, 44% with MCI, and 3% of CN. Among CN, the Aβ-positive group showed worse longitudinal performance on the BHA-CS compared to the Aβ-negative group. The BHA-CS is sensitive to cognitive decline in preclinical and prodromal neurodegenerative disease.
Key findings
- The BHA-CS was accurate at detecting cognitive impairment and exhibited excellent long-term stability.
- Reliable decline over one year was detected in 75% of participants with dementia, 44% with MCI, and 3% of CN.
- Among CN, the Aβ-positive group showed worse longitudinal performance on the BHA-CS compared to the Aβ-negative group.
- The BHA-CS is sensitive to cognitive decline in preclinical and prodromal neurodegenerative disease.

How this study scored 68/100
Published in a leading specialty journal, and it is a longitudinal study following the same people over time. Scored zero for effect reported and randomised / blinded because the record does not state it. We have no data on journal's citation record, times cited, citations per year, impact for its field and year, cited by studies here, still being cited, senior author's track record, institution's track record, multi-centre collaboration and free to read, so those were left out: it earned 38 of the 56 points we could judge it on, which is 68 out of 100.
