Retinal dysfunction in APOE4 knock-in mouse model of Alzheimer's disease
Surabhi D Abhyankar, Qianyi Luo, Gabriella D Hartman, Neha Mahajan, Timothy W Corson, Adrian L Oblak, Bruce T Lamb, Ashay D Bhatwadekar. Alzheimer's & dementia : the journal of the Alzheimer's Association, 2025-01-03
Topic: Genetics and APOE
APOE4-KI mice showed impaired retinal structure, vasculature, function, vision, increased gliosis and neuroinflammation, and downregulation of synaptogenesis. The APOE ε4 allele is associated with increased susceptibility to retinal degeneration compared to the APOE ε3 allele. HIGHLIGHTS: Apolipoprotein E (APOE)4 mice exhibit structural and functional deficits of the retina. The retinal defects in APOE4 mice are attributed to increased neuroinflammation. APOE4 mice show a unique retinal transcriptome, yet with key brain similarities. The retina offers a non-invasive biomarker for the detection and monitoring of Alzheimer's disease.

How this study scored 46/100
Published in a leading specialty journal. Scored zero for study design, sample size, effect reported and randomised / blinded because the record does not state it. We have no data on journal's citation record, times cited, citations per year, impact for its field and year, cited by studies here, still being cited, senior author's track record, institution's track record, multi-centre collaboration and free to read, so those were left out: it earned 26 of the 56 points we could judge it on, which is 46 out of 100.
