Pathological alterations of the cerebral microvasculature in Alzheimer's disease and related dementing disorders
Buée L, Hof PR, Bouras C, Delacourte A, Perl DP, Morrison JH, Fillit HM.. Acta neuropathologica, 1994-01-01
Topic: Plasma and spinal-fluid biomarkers
In all dementing illnesses, increased microvascular pathology was evident compared to normal controls. These microvascular abnormalities demonstrated regional and laminar selectivity, and were primarily found in layers III and V of frontal and temporal cortex. Quantitative analysis employing computer-assisted microscopy demonstrated that the decrease in microvascular density in Alzheimer's disease was statistically significant compared to age-matched controls. Our studies further demonstrated that the microvascular pathology displays regional and laminar patterns which parallel patterns of neuronal loss.

How this study scored 40/100
Published in a leading specialty journal. Scored zero for study design, sample size, effect reported, studied in people and randomised / blinded because the record does not state it. We have no data on journal's citation record, times cited, citations per year, impact for its field and year, cited by studies here, still being cited, senior author's track record, institution's track record and multi-centre collaboration, so those were left out: it earned 23 of the 58 points we could judge it on, which is 40 out of 100.
