✓ Peer-reviewed alzhub usefulness score 46 out of 100. Risk genes beyond APOE

Topic: Brain proteins, microglia and lab models

The beta-amyloid precursor protein (APP) is an orphan transmembrane receptor whose physiological role is largely unknown. APP is cleaved by proteases generating amyloid-beta (Abeta) peptide, the main component of the amyloid plaques that are associated with Alzheimer's disease. Here, we show that APP binds netrin-1, a multifunctional guidance and trophic factor.

Key findings

Why it matters

This study found that netrin-1 binds APP and that this binding suppresses amyloid-beta peptide production in brain slices from Alzheimer model transgenic mice. This is a laboratory and animal study and does not show any treatment, cure, or prevention for Alzheimer's disease in humans.
