Glycemia and levels of cerebrospinal fluid amyloid and tau in patients attending a memory clinic
Lieza G Exalto, Wiesje M van der Flier, Phillip Scheltens, Geert Jan Biessels. Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, 2010-05-07
Topic: Plasma and spinal-fluid biomarkers
In regression analyses across the whole study sample adjusted for age, sex, and diagnostic group, there was no relationship between HbA1c or fasting glucose and CSF tau, p-tau 182, or Abeta42 levels. Stratification for diabetes mellitus did not change the results. These observations do not support the hypothesis that the association between dysglycemia and impaired cognitive functioning is mediated through aberrant amyloid or tau metabolism.
Key findings
- In regression analyses across the whole study sample adjusted for age, sex, and diagnostic group, there was no relationship between HbA1c or fasting glucose and CSF tau, p-tau 182, or Abeta42 levels.
- Stratification for diabetes mellitus did not change the results.
- These observations do not support the hypothesis that the association between dysglycemia and impaired cognitive functioning is mediated through aberrant amyloid or tau metabolism.

How this study scored 52/100
Published in a peer-reviewed journal, and it is a snapshot of people at one point in time. Scored zero for effect reported and randomised / blinded because the record does not state it. We have no data on journal's citation record, times cited, citations per year, impact for its field and year, cited by studies here, still being cited, senior author's track record, institution's track record, multi-centre collaboration and free to read, so those were left out: it earned 29 of the 56 points we could judge it on, which is 52 out of 100.
