Decreased levels of guanosine 3′, 5′‐monophosphate (c GMP ) in cerebrospinal fluid ( CSF ) are associated with cognitive decline and amyloid pathology in A lzheimer's disease
Ana Ugarte, Francisco Gil‐Bea, Carolina García‐Barroso, Ángel Cedazo‐Minguez, M. Javier Ramírez, Rafael Franco, Ana García‐Osta, Julen Oyarzabal et al.. Neuropathology and Applied Neurobiology, 2015-05-13
Topic: Plasma and spinal-fluid biomarkers
c GMP , and not c AMP levels, were significantly lower in the CSF of patients diagnosed with mild AD when compared with nondemented controls. CSF levels of c GMP showed a significant association with MMSE ‐diagnosed clinical dementia and with CSF biomarker A β 42 in AD patients. Significant increase in PDE 5 expression was detected in temporal cortex of AD patients compared with that of age‐matched healthy control subjects. No changes in the expression of others PDE s were detected. These results support the potential involvement of c GMP in the pathological and clinical development of AD . The c GMP reduction in early stages of AD might participate in the aggravation of amyloid pathology and cognitive decline.
Key findings
- c GMP , and not c AMP levels, were significantly lower in the CSF of patients diagnosed with mild AD when compared with nondemented controls.
- CSF levels of c GMP showed a significant association with MMSE ‐diagnosed clinical dementia and with CSF biomarker A β 42 in AD patients.
- Significant increase in PDE 5 expression was detected in temporal cortex of AD patients compared with that of age‐matched healthy control subjects.
- No changes in the expression of others PDE s were detected.
- These results support the potential involvement of c GMP in the pathological and clinical development of AD .

How this study scored 46/100
Published in a peer-reviewed journal. Scored zero for study design, effect reported and randomised / blinded because the record does not state it. We have no data on journal's citation record, times cited, citations per year, impact for its field and year, cited by studies here, still being cited, senior author's track record, institution's track record, multi-centre collaboration and free to read, so those were left out: it earned 26 of the 56 points we could judge it on, which is 46 out of 100.
