CSF spaces in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus: morphology and volumetry
Hajime Kitagaki, Etsuro Mori, Kazunari Ishii, Shigeru Yamaji, Nobutsugu Hirono, Toru Imamura. PubMed Central, 1998-08-01
Topic: Brain imaging, connectivity and assessment
In patients with idiopathic NPH, the CSF volume was significantly increased in the ventricles and decreased in the superior convexity and medial subarachnoid spaces as compared with patients with other dementias. The sylvian CSF volume in patients with idiopathic NPH was significantly greater than in patients with Alzheimer disease. The volume of the basal cistern was comparable among the three groups. In several patients with idiopathic NPH, focally dilated sulci were observed over the convexity or medial surface of the hemisphere. Our results indicate that findings of enlarged basal cisterns and sylvian fissures and of focally dilated sulci support, rather than exclude, the diagnosis of shunt-responsive idiopathic NPH and suggest that this condition is caused by a suprasylvian subarachnoid block.
Key findings
- In patients with idiopathic NPH, the CSF volume was significantly increased in the ventricles and decreased in the superior convexity and medial subarachnoid spaces as compared with patients with other dementias.
- The sylvian CSF volume in patients with idiopathic NPH was significantly greater than in patients with Alzheimer disease.
- The volume of the basal cistern was comparable among the three groups.
- In several patients with idiopathic NPH, focally dilated sulci were observed over the convexity or medial surface of the hemisphere.
- Our results indicate that findings of enlarged basal cisterns and sylvian fissures and of focally dilated sulci support, rather than exclude, the diagnosis of shunt-responsive idiopathic NPH and suggest that this condition is caused by a suprasylvian subarachnoid block.

How this study scored 40/100
Published in a peer-reviewed journal. Scored zero for study design, sample size, effect reported, studied in people and randomised / blinded because the record does not state it. We have no data on journal's citation record, times cited, citations per year, impact for its field and year, cited by studies here, still being cited, senior author's track record, institution's track record and multi-centre collaboration, so those were left out: it earned 23 of the 58 points we could judge it on, which is 40 out of 100.
