Comparative comorbidity burden in hospitalized primary Parkinson's disease and secondary parkinsonism: a cross-sectional study from Southwest China
Xiao X, Xia C, Xu Q, Si Y, Diao H, Zhou B, yangyang C.. Research Square, 2026-09-09
Topic: Brain imaging, connectivity and assessment
The study evaluated 1,457 PD patients (1,050 primary; 407 secondary) alongside 2,100 matched non-PD controls. PD patients exhibited a significantly higher comorbidity burden than controls (mean comorbidities: 2.8 for primary PD, 3.6 for secondary parkinsonism, and 2.1 for the control group). The most prevalent comorbidities were cerebrovascular disease, hypertension, and peripheral vascular disease. Both PD subtypes showed strong cross-sectional associations with depression, dementia, and cerebrovascular disease (p < 0.05). Hospitalized patients with primary PD or secondary parkinsonism had a higher recorded comorbidity burden than non-PD inpatients, with particularly strong cross-sectional associations with depression, dementia, and cerebrovascular disease. These findings describe co-occurrence and do not establish temporal or causal relationships.

How this study scored 16/100
Preprint — not yet peer-reviewed. It scored 27 on the same rubric, but non-peer-reviewed sources are capped at 16, so it shows as 16. Scored zero for sample size, effect reported, studied in people and randomised / blinded because the record does not state it. We have no data on times cited, citations per year, impact for its field and year, cited by studies here, still being cited, senior author's track record, institution's track record and multi-centre collaboration, so those were left out: it earned 17 of the 62 points we could judge it on, which is 27 out of 100.
