Cholesterol profiles and incident cognitive decline among older adults: the Shanghai Aging Study
Ding Ding, Fen Zhou, Yang Cao, Xiaoniu Liang, Wanqing Wu, Zhenxu Xiao, Qianhua Zhao, Wei Deng. Age and ageing, 2021-02-26
Topic: Brain imaging, connectivity and assessment
among VRFs-free participants, TC (HR 0.62, 95%CI 0.40-0.95) and LDL-C (HR 0.47, 95%CI 0.28-0.80) were inversely associated with incident dementia, LDL-C was inversely associated with incident AD (HR 0.50, 95%CI 0.28-0.90). A significant correlation was found between incremental TC (β = 0.08), LDL-C (β = 0.09), and a slower annual decline of MMSE score. effect of cholesterol on cognitive decline may be modified by VRFs.

How this study scored 63/100
Published in a peer-reviewed journal, and it is a cohort study following people over time. Scored zero for sample size, studied in people and randomised / blinded because the record does not state it. We have no data on journal's citation record, times cited, citations per year, impact for its field and year, cited by studies here, still being cited, senior author's track record, institution's track record, multi-centre collaboration and free to read, so those were left out: it earned 35 of the 56 points we could judge it on, which is 63 out of 100.
