The cholinergic system in aging and neuronal degeneration
Schliebs R, Arendt T.. Behavioural brain research, 2010-12-09
Topic: Brain proteins, microglia and lab models
However, the previous view of significant cholinergic cell loss during aging has been challenged. However, in pathological situations associated with cognitive deficits, such as Parkinsons's disease, Down-syndrome, progressive supranuclear palsy, Jakob-Creutzfeld disease, Korsakoff's syndrome, traumatic brain injury, significant degenerations of basal forebrain cholinergic cells have been observed.

Key findings
- However, the previous view of significant cholinergic cell loss during aging has been challenged.
- However, in pathological situations associated with cognitive deficits, such as Parkinsons's disease, Down-syndrome, progressive supranuclear palsy, Jakob-Creutzfeld disease, Korsakoff's syndrome, traumatic brain injury, significant degenerations of basal forebrain cholinergic cells have been observed.
Why it matters
This review notes that the previous view of significant cholinergic cell loss during aging has been challenged, while significant degeneration of basal forebrain cholinergic cells occurs in several conditions with cognitive deficits. It reports no treatment, cure or prevention.
