Shireen Sindi, Ingemar Kåreholt, Lena Johansson, Johan Skoog, Linnea Sjöberg, Hui-Xin Wang, Boo Johansson, Laura Fratiglioni et al.. Alzheimer's & dementia : the journal of the Alzheimer's Association, 2018-07-17
Topic: Brain imaging, connectivity and assessment
Midlife insomnia (fully adjusted hazard ratio = 1.24, 95% confidence interval = 1.02-1.50) and late-life terminal insomnia (fully adjusted odds ratio = 1.94, 95% confidence interval = 1.08-3.49) were associated with a higher dementia risk. Late-life long sleep duration (>9 hours) was also associated with an increased dementia risk (adjusted odds ratio = 3.98, 95% confidence interval = 1.87-8.48). Midlife insomnia and late-life terminal insomnia or long sleep duration were associated with a higher late-life dementia risk.
Key findings
- Midlife insomnia (fully adjusted hazard ratio = 1.24, 95% confidence interval = 1.02-1.50) and late-life terminal insomnia (fully adjusted odds ratio = 1.94, 95% confidence interval = 1.08-3.49) were associated with a higher dementia risk.
- Late-life long sleep duration (>9 hours) was also associated with an increased dementia risk (adjusted odds ratio = 3.98, 95% confidence interval = 1.87-8.48).
- Midlife insomnia and late-life terminal insomnia or long sleep duration were associated with a higher late-life dementia risk.

How this study scored 69/100
Published in a leading specialty journal, and it is a longitudinal study following the same people over time. Scored zero for effect reported and randomised / blinded because the record does not state it. We have no data on journal's citation record, times cited, citations per year, impact for its field and year, cited by studies here, still being cited, senior author's track record, institution's track record and free to read, so those were left out: it earned 41 of the 59 points we could judge it on, which is 69 out of 100.
