The R47H variant in the microglial triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cell 2 (TREM2) receptor is a strong risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD).
-
Mutation of Triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2) impairs the response of microglia to amyloid-β (Aβ) pathology in Alzheimer's disease (AD), although the mechanism governing TREM2-regulated microglia recruitment to Aβ plaques remains unresolved.

The present findings suggest a significant association between increased serum sTREM2 levels and the risk of developing all-cause dementia, AD, and VaD in the general elderly Japanese population.
